Cherry

Cherry wood worktops have a deep reddish brown heart wood and white pinkish sapwood.  The colour of cherry woods tends to become darker, fuller and richer as time goes by.  The grain of cherry worktops is straight with close fine patterns and the odd swirl adding additional character that will bring a hint of elegance to any kitchen.  Cherry wood is a very durable and water resistant hardwood which works well with hand and electrical tools. It cuts cleanly and polishes to a near perfect finish.  Cherry wood has been used and sought after all over the world for many different applications,  but its foremost use is for high end furniture and cabinet production as well as musical instruments.

Origin:The Wild Cherry or Sweet Cherry (Prunus avium) is a species of cherry, native to Europe, northwest Africa, and western Asia, from the British Isles south to Morocco and Tunisia, north to the Trondheimsfjord region in Norway and east to southern Sweden, Poland, Ukraine, the Caucasus, and northern Iran, with a small disjunct population in the western Himalaya.

Interesting Fact of the Cherry Tree:The gum from bark wounds is aromatic and can be chewed as a substitute for chewing gum.  Medicine can be prepared from the stalks of the drupes that is astringent, antitussive, and diuretic.  A green dye can also be prepared from the plant.
