Timber worksurface Installation Guide, Storage & base unit installation

Section 1: before starting work on the tops

1.1 Fittings and installation Materials

Every Bespoke work-surface can be purchased with installation fittings and a customer care kit.

The installation fittings are required for a proper installation of timber worksurfaces, while the Customer Care Kit will show the customer how to maintain the tops for years to come. For blank, unfinished tops, the installation materials and Customer Care Kits must be specified at the time of order.

Extra Installation kits and individual packs of each item can be obtained from your kitchen supplier.

The pack includes:

  • Slotted steel stretcher brackets and screws to fix down the tops.
  • Low modulus (flexible) clear silicone sealer for sealing joints, to sinks, to walls and to adjacent furniture
  • Edge seal, a flexible brush-on material to provide moisture resistance to all concealed edges, endgrain and cut-outs
  • Worksurface bolts and biscuit joints to align and clamp up joints between pieces of worksurface
  • Worksurface oil for sealing, finishing and maintaining solid timber worksurfaces.
  • A moisture barrier to protect the underside of worksurfaces from steam and moisture produced by built-under dishwashers, washing machines and microwaves is available to be purchased separately.

Note :

Some of the quantities of each item may need to be augmented according to the size and design of the worksurface installation and the dictates of the site.

1.2 Storage

Tops should be installed as soon as possible after delivery.

If storage is necessary, the tops must be kept in a weather-tight environment, at a temperature and humidity the same as the room ( in normal use ) where they are to be fitted, no wet trades being carried out, no wet or drying building work or on going work.

Store the tops flat and level, supported on battens at 500 – 600mm centres in their original wrapping and completely away from any sources of heat or moisture. Never store them on edge or on end.

1.3 Base unit installation

Install the base and full height units with spaces for built-under and slot-in appliances, ect.

Take account of the spacing and support requirements for appliances. (See Part 2, Section 2.6 – 2.8, also Section 5.1c .)

Level them up and fix securely to the walk and each other.

Note:

Worksurface must not be installed above radiators and other heating devices.
